then i moved to los angeles in 2003. one of the things about moving to l.a. from the east coast when you are 30 years old is that all of the sudden, you feel very divorced from this east coast sort of traditional upbringing. that happened to me when i came out here. i was living in a part of the city that felt very new. you know, dated back really to the 1950s, and i felt very detached all of the sudden. that thing i took for granted growing up in a log cabin, living next to amish people, ect., ect., and all the sudden, i needed that in my life. one day, i was in the shower, loofaing, and my wife bursts into the bathroom, just out of nowhere says, if you could go back to college now and major in any subject, what would it be? i said, well, that's a good question. what would i do? i burst out history. even as i said it, i didn't quite put all the pieces together. i didn't quite understand what it was, but i felt with was missing in my life that i needed to learn about the past, that this would somehow make me a better person and citizen. not that long afterwar

i was born in los angeles in the '60s and raised by parents who were very liberal. in fact, they had a very unusual romantic intermarriage. they were cautioned not marry, i had a jewish mother and my father was a surfer. and everyone thought at time it was a big deal. now it seems not anything to write home about. we were expose to the social issues in the '60s an my father in particular gave me a reading list when i was as young as nine which including black power literature, "to kill a mockingbird" and alice walker. he didn't know she was in that volume. and we went on many peace marchs and then when we moved to the east coast, i went a quaker school, carolina friends which was progressive but had a women study's curriculum. i was able to start taking women's history in a formal classroom setting but a school that encouraged learning at your own pace. when i was 12, and i was able to sort of pursue the subjects that interested me because i had been, you know, tested and pronounced gifted at an early age. a lot of teachers were very interested in mentoring me and w

not as much traffic as 101 south into los angeles. this is really a traffic moving out to san fernando valley and away from the downtown area. we don't know why this car refuses to pull over and stop. refuses to heed the warnings of l.a. county sheriff and chp. we don't know if the driver is wanted for a particular criminal act but now at a standstill because that's how the traffic goes in southern california. it will be interesting to see if all traffic halts to box this guy in. but, the california highway patrol is being very, very cautious here. and that is because there have been a number of instances, including in los angeles, when people have been killed by virtue of high-speed chases. so police don't want to aggravate the situation. harris faulkner has been checking into this and following it. harris, what more do you know? >> reporter: they are now on one of the busiest stretches of the road in this country. this is 101 south through studio city where he is moving now. why we need to know he could have gone northbound and had
